Q: Do you have any advice on finding the right entertainment act?

A: Music is the soundtrack to your wedding. Do you want your theme to appear on the dance floor? What kind of time do you want your guests to have (pretending that you can will your nearest and dearest to bust out the air guitar – you never know)? Big brass bands will get people swinging but a DJ can switch between the oldies and alternative to get the masses moving.

Find entertainment using The Pink Pages. Play it safe by seeing potential entertainers performing before you book them for your big day so you can get a feel for how they work the crowd. Many acts have taped public performances or audio recordings. If hearing or seeing them in action is not possible, ask for referrals from the previous weddings the band or DJ played. A good test is the song of your first dance; if the DJ doesn’t have and won’t get it, or the band doesn’t know it and won’t play it, move on to the next candidate.

If music is not where you want to blow your budget, consider having a DJ. They tend to cost less than ensembles for obvious reasons. However, if you love your gigs, go live. An up and coming trend of 2008 is the best of both worlds: cover bands! Cover bands allow you to hear your favourite tunes, live.

The musicians will be working for you so they should respect your preferences. Many ask for a list of songs you want to hear played and a list of what you don’t want played.
